By the Mayor, Recorder, and Aldermen, and the
Commissioners for paving and cleanfng the Streets , Sec.
WHEREAS the cleaning the Streets of this City, as by Lav/ directed, will con¬
tribute much to the Conveniency and Health of the Inhabitants, but has not hi¬
therto been duly performed, for want of

regular Scavenger : And whereas Ro¬
bert Erwin hath undertaken this neceffary Service; therefore *public Notice is hereby
given, that from and after the Firfl Day of April next, the faid Scavenger will remove and
carry off all Mud, Dirt and Filth, that fhall be found in the Cart-way of the feveral Streets,
Lanes and Alleys that are paved, and will attend once in every Week, at the Door of each
Inhabitant, to receive into his Carts, all fuch Dirt as fhall arife from, and is incident to,
common Houfe-keeping, to be carried off free of Charge. And alfo to receive and carry
off, for Hire, all fuch Dirt, Dung, Afhes, or other Filth, as fhall be occafioned by any
Trade, Occupation, or otherwife. And all Soap-makers, Carpenters, Shoemakers, and
other Tradefmen, and all other Perfons, are hereby warned and cautioned againfl throwing
out, or laying down any Afhes, Shavings, Trafh, Rubbifh, Filth, or other Annoyance
whatfoever, on any Pavement within this City, as they muft expedt to be flridtly profecuted
and fined for the fame ; fuch Abufes being not only public Nufances, but particularly in¬
jurious to the Scavenger. - And it is expedted, that every Citizen that regards Cleanlinefs,
will not only avoid offending in the Premifes himfelf, but will difcountenance the fame in
others, and, to his utmofl, promote the good Purpofes defigned by the Adi of Affembly in
this Cafe made and provided ; which, as far as it relates to cleanfing the Streets, is, for the
fuller Information of all concerned, herewith publifhed.

AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED by the Authority aforefaid, That the
<c Inhabitants and Occupiers of the Houfes and Lots, and the Sextons, Porters, or other
ct Keepers of Churches, Meeting-houfes, Academies, Schools, and other public Buildings
<c and Burying-grounds, fronting the paved Streets, Lanes and Alleys within the faid City,
“ fhall rake and fweep into the Cart-way the Dirt, Soil, and other Filth to be found on the
<c Brick Pavement or Foot-way, before their refpedtive Houfes* Lots or Dwellings, or caufe
<c the fame to be done, once at leafl in every Week; Fhat is to Jay, on every Friday , when
<{ the Snow or Ice on the faid Pavements does not prevent, that it may be removed by the
“ faid Scavengers on the fame Day, or the Day following, under the Penalty of any Sum
rc not exceeding Five Shillijjgs for every Negledt or Refufal.
cc AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED by the Authority aforefaid, That no
cc Perfon or Perfons whatfoever fhall call or lay, or caufe to be call or laid, any Shavings,
<c Allies, Dung, or other Filth or Annoyance on any Pavement within the faid City, under
<c the Penalty of any Sum not exceeding Fwcnty Shillings for every fuch Offence ; but every
<c fuch Perfon and Perfons having fuch Shavings, Afhes, Dung or other Filth, fhall keep the
tc fame in fome other Place, until the Scavenger fhall attend with his Cart to carry off the
t£ fame, which he is hereby enjoined to do once in every Week, at leafl, if required, at the
Cf Door of every fuch Perfon, under the Penalty of Five Shillings for every Refufal, and
u to take and receive the fame into his Cart, and to remove the lame out of the inhabited
“ Parts of the faid City, under the Penalty of Five Shillings for every Negledt or Refufal.
“ PROVIDED ALWAYS, AND BE IT ENACTED, That every fuch Per-
<c fon having fuch Mud, Dung, Allies or other Filth, fo to be carried off, fhall pay to every
“ fuch Scavenger, for all fuch Filth, and no other, as fhall be occafioned by, or arife from
“ his particular Trade, Bufinefs or Occupation, and is not incident to common Houfe-keep-
<c ing, at fuch Rate as fhall be from Time to Time fettled and afeertained by the faid Com-
cc miflioners, unlcfs he, fhe or they fhall. chufe to carry off the fame at his, her or their
