German-language Newspapers
The State Library's newspaper holdings include Pennsylvanian German-language newspapers from the counties of Berks, Lehigh, Lancaster, Northampton, Lebanon, and more. German immigrants to Pennsylvania passed their language through the generations, which is represented in their print culture. In southeastern and southcentral Pennsylvania, the heart of "Pennsylvania Dutch County," German was commonly-spoken well into the 20th century by everyone of German descent, and a significant number of descendants in the region today retain fluency. The printed German used for the newspapers is High German; however, spelling may vary from modern High German.
Also included in this section is a collection of digitized microfilm reels of newspapers from German P.O.W. camps in the United States during World War Two. Newspapers from Pennsylvania P.O.W. camps are presented alongside other newspapers from temporary camps and military forts across the United States.
The holdings of German-language newspapers, both physical and microfilm, at the State Library of Pennsylvania are not complete. The issues presented for the years digitized reflect the holdings of the library, and other issues may exist beyond these holdings.
