German Language Newspapers
German immigrants to Pennsylvania passed their language through the generations. In southeastern and southcentral Pennsylvania, the heart of "Pennsylvania Dutch County," German was commonly spoken well into the 20th century by everyone of German descent. The State Library's newspaper holdings include papers from Berks, Lehigh, Lancaster, Northampton, and Lebanon counties. Individual titles are often not complete. The printed German used for the newspapers is High German; however, spelling may vary from modern High German.
